Description:

Easter morning in a small Sicilian village. In the distance, the sound of Turiddu singing is heard - he has just said goodbye to his beloved, the coachman Alfio's wife, Lola. The villagers gather in the square. Some are hurrying to mass, others are idly strolling. Mother Lucia's tavern is right across from the church. Turiddu's fiancée, Santuzza, comes here looking for him. The young woman has no doubts. She tells Mother Lucia that Turiddu did not go to Francofonte to buy wine, as she thinks, but spent the night in the village with Lola. The old woman, taken aback, invites Santuzza to her home, but he refuses, reminding her that he has been excommunicated from the church. Before Lucia can find out more, the villagers gathered in the square greet Alfio. The coachman has finished his favorite work and returns home happy, because he is sure that his beautiful Lola is waiting faithfully. Alfio visits his mother Lucia with a warm heart and asks if the old wine is still there. “I don’t know, my Turiddu is here to buy wine,” the woman tells him. But early in the morning, Alfio catches sight of Turiddu outside her house. This news once again surprises Lucia, but Santuzza signals her not to say anything. The villagers go to church to pray, and Lucia, left alone, hears Santuzza’s sad story. It turns out that Turiddu and Lola were going to get married earlier, but the young man went off to war, and when he returned, Lola found him already married to Alfio. Turiddu tried to ease his pain with a new love and fell in love with Santuzza. But now Lola is seized by jealousy and suspicion and again turns her back on Turiddu. Abandoned and humiliated, Santuzza comes to Mother Lucia to share her sorrow.

A terrified Lucia goes to church to pray, while Turiddu, who has returned to the tavern, is not at all happy to see Santuzza. A tense dialogue ensues, with Turiddu adamantly denying Santuzza's accusations, and when Santuzza tells him that she was at Lola's house at dawn, he furiously accuses her of spying.

Their quarrel is interrupted by the appearance of Lola, who is singing carelessly in the street. Lola sarcastically asks Santuzza why she is not at Mass this Easter. Santuzza replies that there is a place at Mass for those who are sinless, and upon hearing this, Lola thanks God, and this irony causes Santuzza immense anger and rage. Lola continues on her way, and the couple tries to sort out their relationship. Finally, the frustrated Turiddu chases Lola. Santuzza's vain pleas and gestures are eventually replaced by a curse: "You had a bad Easter, I swear it!", he chases after his former fiancé. Santuzza carries out her threat. She meets Alfio on the street and tells him about his wife's and Turiddu's infidelity. “I will avenge the betrayal before sunset!”, – Alfio swears. The mass is over. Lola, who has left the church, asks Turiddu to stay, but the woman hurries home to see her husband. Turiddu assures her that Alfio will come here too. Lola agrees and Turiddu invites everyone’s mother Lucia to a glass of wine in the tavern. The situation becomes tense when Alfio appears. He refuses the wine offered by the host, “I can’t take what you have offered, that wine turns to poison in a second!”, – he says. Lola is led away by the women, and the tension culminates in Turiddu biting Alfio on the ear, which means a challenge. They fight with knives. But at that very moment, Turiddu realizes that he has done wrong, first of all – in front of Santuzza, who, if he is killed, will be left completely alone. Therefore, he feels obliged to stab Alfio in the heart to save his own life. Alfio coldly replies that he will wait behind the garden.

Left alone, Turiddu calls his mother, telling her that the wine has made him dizzy and that he is going to go out into the open air. But before that, he asks her to bless him as she blessed him when he went to the army. And if anything happens to him, to take care of Santuzza, whom he once promised to take to the altar. His son's incomprehensible phrases cause his mother Lucia to be surprised and worried, but Turiddu blames everything on the wine, asks her to pray for him, says goodbye and runs away. Lucia chases after her fleeing son, but Santuzza meets him at the door and the women embrace. In the indistinct screams coming from afar, the terrible words gradually become clear: "Turidu has been killed."
